AFCL has been implementing DFID and NABARD supported watershed and livelihood projects in the districts of Kalahandi and Bargarh of Orissa which are most backward districts in the State. AFCL has so far promoted 260 SHGs and 125 User Groups involved in livelihood activities in 46 villages in these districts. To sustain livelihood options, AFCL has initiated organic farming in the project area and entered into an agreement with ITC Ltd., Kolkata to promote organic spices, medicinal and aromatic plants among small and marginal farmers to ensure a higher realization from agriculture. “Sustainable Livelihood through Organic Farming Practices”, a pilot project spread over 30 ha of land would open a way for huge markets in future for disadvantaged tribal farmers of Orissa. The project has been initiated with cultivation of organic red chilies and coriander. The project aims to give farmers proper help and assistance in the appropriate package of practices and extension services. This would include exposure visits by farmers to Guntur market to understand importance of quality seeds, grading, post harvest handling of crop and market dynamics.
